The method involves determining desired manifold air pressure (MAP) based on a rotational torque requirement of a driver. A boost device e.g. turbocharger or supercharger, is controlled based on the desired MAP and base boost pressure, and operated using boost pressure. The boost pressure is not sufficient to operate the boost device when the boost pressure is smaller than the base boost pressure. A butterfly valve (112) is controlled based on the desired MAP and the base boost pressure, which is determined based on the air pressure.
