The method involves measuring a reigning pressure i.e. boost pressure, in an intake manifold (2) of an internal combustion engine (3). Mechanical pressure adjusting units (17a, 17b) i.e. discharge valves, are controlled by a control signal (20a) adjusted based on the measurement, where the units adjust a pressure of an exhaust gas (14) in a manner to adjust the pressure around a pressure set point value. Compression rate set points of respective low and high pressure turbocompressors (5, 4) are used for calculating the control signal based on the measurement of the pressure in the manifold.
