Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to a 1C-compound or a mixture containing 1C-compound, in which at least one the carbon atom has an oxidation state of smaller than +4, under the action of sunlight and the use of a catalyst comprising (a) inorganic semiconductors as a carrier, (b) one or more dye compounds located on surface of the carrier, and (c) optionally one or more substances located on the surface of the carrier, comprising (c1) one or more metals and (c2) one or more metal compounds, is claimed. Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to a 1C-compound or a mixture containing 1C-compound, in which at least one the carbon atom has an oxidation state of smaller than +4, under the action of sunlight and use of a catalyst comprising (a) inorganic semiconductors as a carrier, (b) one or more dye compounds located on surface of the carrier, and (c) optionally one or more substances located on the surface of the carrier, comprising (c1) one or more metals and (c2) one or more metal compounds, is claimed, where the dye compounds have a structure of formula (D1-A1) (I). D1 : a donor group, which contains at least one carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom single bond and/or a carbon carbon or a carbon heteroatom double bond and at least one, optionally annelated carbo or heterocyclic ring; and A1 : an acceptor group, which contains at least one carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom single bond and/or a carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom double bond and at least one, optionally annelated carbo or heterocyclic ring, where the groups A1 and D1 are together in pi conjugation. An independent claim is included for a catalyst comprising the component (a), (b) and (c1).
