A hybrid powertrain includes an engine, a starter motor, and a gear train connecting the starter motor to the engine and a motor / generator. A belt drive connects the motor / generator to the engine. The drive train has a first energy storage device with a first operating voltage range and a second energy storage device with a second operating voltage range that at least partially coincides with the first operating voltage range. A controller adjusts a switching device to an on state, so that the first energy storage device is connected to the second energy storage device, or to an off state, in which the first energy storage device is separated from the second energy storage device.
