The method involves providing a control device (26) to control the temperature of a high voltage traction battery (50) within an operating temperature range, when the vehicle (20) is in operation state. The battery is preconditioned to a battery drive temperature when the outdoor temperature is deviated from of the ambient temperature range. The interior space of vehicle is preconditioned when the vehicle is connected with the charger (76) and the power source. The traction battery is charged if the state of charge is lower than threshold value.
