The method involves determining a required braking distance to the standstill of a vehicle (1) at a light signal system (2), whose light signal (L1) changes from green to yellow. The determined required braking distance exceeds the detected distance to the light signal system, if the vehicle is automatically accelerated. The determined required braking distance exceeds the distance to the vehicle traveling ahead, if the vehicle is automatically decelerated. A predetermined distance of the vehicle is temporarily fallen short to the vehicle running ahead.
