The degradation associated with repeated startup and shutdown of solid polymer electrolyte fuel cells comprising PtCo alloy catalysts for the cathode can be particularly poor. However, a significant and unexpected improvement in durability has been observed resulting from integrating a selectively conductive component into the fuel cell with the selectively conductive component electrically connected in series with the anode components.
