The method involves providing contact sensors (Pr,Pl) for detecting front impact, and acceleration sensors (Gr,Gl) in the outer area of the vehicle. The signals of the contact sensors and acceleration sensors are evaluated and triggering of protective device is judged. The protective device is triggered irrespective of signals from sensors, when the signals of contact sensors and acceleration sensors exceed a predetermined threshold value.
