The method involves adjusting a torque output of a starter (96) or generator integrated into a power train in reaction on a difference between a desired power train rotational torque and an actual power train rotational torque during partial closing of a power train separation clutch. A power train separation clutch torque is estimated in an open loop based on a power train separation clutch operation command. An engine (10) is started by supplying fuel and an ignition spark to the engine before the power train separation clutch is completely closed. The desired power train rotational torque is a desired torque converter impeller rotational torque. The actual power train rotational torque is an actual torque converter impeller rotational torque. An independent claim is also included for a hybrid vehicle power train system.
