The method involves detecting grooves outside a vehicle and relating to the approach of a toll gate (E2), by generating a signature of measurement signal from a wheel speed sensor of the vehicle. The entry of the vehicle in a toll zone is deduced (E3) by comparing the measurement signal signature with a reference signature, where the step for deducing the entry of the vehicle in the toll zone is repeated for a predetermined time. An order is generated (E4) for disconnecting a cruise control system of the vehicle upon detecting the entry of the vehicle in the toll zone. An independent claim is also included for a device for automatic disconnection of a cruise control system of a vehicle approaching a toll gate.
