The method involves cutting a catalytic bread (2) according to a cutting plane (P1) orthogonal to a longitudinal axis (A1) of channels. Images of cutting surfaces of the catalytic bread are acquired by an image sensor and processed in two automated operations by an automatic calculating unit. A geometry of a contour of a section of the selected channel in the cutting plane is determined during location operation by the calculating unit. A geometrical parameter is deduced from the determined geometry of the contour. An independent claim is also included for a method for estimating a heat-transferring surface of a catalytic bread in an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine of a car.
