PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of predicting the arrival time of the principal shock of an earthquake by which the arrival time of the S-wave can be predicted easily and accurately from information on the P-wave of the earthquake obtained by local seismometers without intervention of information on the seismic center.;SOLUTION: The relational expression between the maximum value of STA/LTA calculated from the observed waveforms of P-waves at measuring points of a plurality of past earthquakes and the durations of the P-waves at the measuring points is figured out in advance from data on the earthquakes; upon occurrence of a new earthquake, after detection of the P-wave by local seismometers for the prediction, the P-wave is measured continuously and STA/LTA is calculated, the duration of the P-wave is updated from the successively obtained maximum values of STA/LTA and the relational expression, and the arrival time of the S-wave is predicted by using the duration of the P-wave and the detection time of the P-wave.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2014,JPO&INPIT
