PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of a cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high pressure sintered material and a cutting tool made of a surface coating cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high pressure sintered material, of using a cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high pressure sintered material as a tool base body, for improving chipping resistance, by reducing the occurrence of crater abrasion. PSOLUTION: This cutting tool made of the cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high pressure sintered material is provided by brazing and joining the tool base body composed of the cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high pressure sintered material to a cemented carbide base material, or the cutting tool made of the surface coating cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high sintered material is also provided by depositing-forming a hard film on a surface of the tool base body and the cemented carbide base material. When a surface of a cubic system boron nitride particle being a constituting component of the cubic system boron nitride base ultra-high pressure sintered material is uniformly and closely covered with aluminum oxide having an average coating thickness of 1/2 or less of an average diameter of the particle, the occurrence of the crater abrasion is reduced, the chipping resistance is improved, and falling-off of an edge from a brazing part by the high temperature in deposition is also prevented.
