PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable method for detecting quenching water level to stably detect the water level of a quenching section independent of deposition of granulated slag.;SOLUTION: In a coal gasification apparatus provided with a quenching section 10 to drop molten slag flowing down from a gasification section 6 into quenching water 11 to quench and granulate the slag, the water level in the quenching section is detected by inputting detection temperatures of a plurality of thermocouples TC(1-6) arranged in vertical direction in the quenching section interposing spaces between adjacent thermocouples, selecting a pair of thermocouples adjacent to each other and having largest detection temperature difference, and judging that the water level of the quenching section is present between the pair of thermocouples.
