PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge detection method capable of stably detecting an edge of a traveling member (band material, especially) even in a manufacturing line filled with misty droplets or fume.SOLUTION: The edge detection method includes: an imaging process of imaging a plurality of areas including the edge line of a traveling member by imaging means; a differential image generation process of generating differential images by obtaining the differential strengths of pixels in the images for each of the plurality of temporally continuous images obtained by the imaging process; a composite differential image generation process of generating a composite differential image by compositing the plurality of temporally continuous differential images obtained by the differential image generation process; and a straight line specification process of specifying a straight line where the differential strength sum of the pixels present on the straight line becomes maximum or a straight line where the number of the pixels whose differential strength is equal to or higher than a threshold among the pixels present on the straight line becomes maximum, in the composite differential image obtained by the composite differential image generation process.
