In a method and device for the automatic positioning of a printing test strip for automatic densitometer measurement equipment on printing machines, further automatisation of the measurement procedure is accomplished by means of a search operation by the measuring head before the measurement operation. In order to ensure that the measurement head travels reliably over a measurement field of the printing test strip, the sheet is positioned on the inspection table so as to coincide with register marks on the measuring table.
