The use of sodium metasilicate or orthosilicate in the production of polyols from vegetable oil. The present invention is the use of sodium metasilicate and sodium orthosilicate as a catalyst in the reaction for the production of biodiesel as a substitute for alkali hydroxides commonly used.The metasilicate and orthosilicate are first dried to obtain a final moisture of 5% and then mixed with the source of hydroxyl (glycerol, diethylene glycol, or pentaeritriol, butanediol) and with the oil, in a ratio of 0.2 to 5% by mass of oil. The temperature of the system is maintained between 120 and 170 198 C, for a period of 60 to 180 minutes.The mixture is then decanted and filtered to remove the catalyst after which is in the form of crystals suspended.
