Present invention is based on the deployment of passive polarised glasses for displaying and viewing 3D content on True Colour LED Displays and in particular, LED TVs. In this method, two distinct images needed to create the effect of 3D are presented to the two eyes by means of a polarised filter polarized in the two orthogonal directions. This is contemplated by covering alternate rows or columns of the LED display by a filtering film of the two polarisations. This will enable the viewer to visualise two images - with alternating rows or columns. The viewer wears Polarised 3D glasses of the two different polarisations; the glasses pass two different images to the two eyes at any moment, together producing a 3D effect to the viewer. True colour LED Displays have found wide acceptance in the 2D arena for Advertising, Sports, Function / Event coverage and Information Dissemination applications. LED DigiPosters, LED TVs for Out of Home (OOH) applications, Perimeter displays in sports complexes and Passenger Information displays in Railway stations and Airports are few closely defined products of this family. Text, still images, animated graphics and Video / TV inputs are comfortably handled for an impressive and faithful reproduction with high brightness, rich colour and well defined sharp images. With the advent of 3D in the entertainment segment, development of 3D content as well as development of 3D processing and display capabilities in the conventional Display products have become relevant and necessary. While LCD and Plasma displays are being upgraded for 3D for use in home entertainment, the present invention is aimed at enhancing the functioning of the large screen True colour LED displays (including LED TVs) with 3D features for use in both indoor applications like TVs, in movie theatres and function halls referred as OOH applications and in outdoor applications like drive-in theatres and large public gatherings. Creating the illusion of 3 dimensions relies on the fact that the two eyes of human being are separated by a particular distance. If each eye sees the image view of the same object viewed in the right eye and left eye exclusively, then the brain combines the images to make it appear three dimensional. Polarised filter glasses are employed for viewing 3D movies in theatres and on the televisions at home. The glasses present two different images to the two eyes giving the desired 3D effect while viewing. Passive glasses selectively enable the two eyes to see images of the screen in two different angles. Active glasses enable to see the image in two frames - one after the other - in quick succession and in synchronization with the screen with the help of IR / RF means. LED screens of different sizes, pitch and resolutions can be contemplated for 3D viewing; standard pitches range from 3mm to 9mm for indoors and 9mm to 40mm for outdoors. Present invention discusses indoor model; the scope, however, is not limited to this and can be extended to outdoor applications.
