Pharmaceutical and/or dietary compositions for supplying energy andeutrophication factors to the large intestine to improve its functionality andprevent the appearance of pathological conditions are described. Thepharmaceutical and/or dietary compositions described are composed of one ormore short-chain monocarboxylic acids or their salts, esters and/or amides,mixed with one or more soluble dietary fibres or complex sugars. Thesecompositions are formulated by known techniques suitable for transporting theactive ingredients into the colonic section of the intestine.
