A fast-response photorefractive polymer element (1) which is provided with: a pair of insulating substrates (2, 2) that are arranged generally in parallel to each other; ITO electrodes (3, 3) that are formed on the inner surfaces (2a, 2a) of the pair of insulating substrates (2, 2); dark current control layers (4, 4) that are formed on the inner surfaces (3a, 3a) of the ITO electrodes (3, 3); and a photorefractive composite material (5) that is sandwiched between the pair of insulating substrates (2, 2), with an ITO electrode (3) and a dark current control layer (4) interposed between the photorefractive composite material (5) and each insulating substrate. This fast-response photorefractive polymer element has significantly improved responsiveness by having the photorefractive composite material (5) contain a polytriarylamine (PTAA), which is a photorefractive polymer, and by having each dark current control layer (4) composed of a single layer of a monomolecular film or a plurality of layers of monomolecular films.
