A cost estimation tool (100) for pre-production of a film comprising a processing unit (102) configured to obtain a script divided into a plurality of scenes, receive user input identifying at least one script element such as props and settings in the script; propose to a user at least two techniques for shooting at least one script unit such as a shot or a scene; receive user input selecting a technique for shooting at least one script unit; interact with a database (150) to obtain cost estimates for the identified script elements and the proposed techniques for shooting; calculate a cost estimate for the film based on the identified script elements and the selected techniques for shooting; and output the cost estimate.
