BIOMECHANICALLY DRIVEN REGISTRATION OF PRE-OPERATIVE IMAGE TO INTRA-OPERATIVE 3D IMAGES FOR LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY

A computer-implemented method of using a biomechanical model to constrain registration of a pre-operative image of an anatomical area of interest to an intra-operative image of the anatomical area of interest begins by initializing a plurality of model parameters comprising biomechanical parameter values. Then, an iterative optimization process is performed a plurality of times. During this iterative process, a biomechanical displacement field is generated by applying the biomechanical model to the pre-operative image using the plurality of model parameters. Next, the biomechanical displacement field is applied to the pre-operative image to generate a biomechanically deformed pre-operative image. The biomechanically deformed pre-operative image is compared with the intra-operative image to yield a similarity measurement value. Using the similarity measurement value, the plurality of model parameters are updated for a subsequent iteration. Once the iterative optimization process is complete a diffeomorphic registration of the biomechanically deformed pre-operative image to the intra-operative image is performed. Then, the biomechanically deformed pre-operative image is present overlaying the intra-operative image on a display.
