The method involves conserving path setpoints (CL, CR, CT, CV) relating to guide modes (G1-G4) of a rotorcraft (1) in respective states prior to a person moving a manual control element (4), where the guide modes relate to progression axes (R, V). Commands, generated by an autopilot (9) relating to all progression axes that continue to be engaged, are adapted by the autopilot depending on the current state of progression of the rotorcraft based on the conserved path setpoints and a value of a flight parameter for which an acquisition request is issued.
