The present invention relates to an apparatus for compensating for a slide counter balance pressure of a hydraulic press, and a controlling method thereof, which can save electric power and extend the life of facilities by automatically setting the counter balance pressure appropriately according to the changes in the weight of a mold. The apparatus comprises: a pressure sensor which detects the counter balance pneumatic pressure; an encoder which senses the ascending or descending of a press slide; a current sensor which senses the current of a motor; an input unit which allows a user to input a command and data; a control unit which is connected with the pressure sensor, the encoder, the current sensor, and the input unit, and controls air pressure using an exhaust valve until the load operating current value of the motor agrees with the no-load current value of the motor; a compressor which generates air pressure; an suction valve which is connected with the compressor and is opened or closed by the control unit; a counter balance tank which is connected with the suction valve and stores the air pressure; an exhaust valve which is connected with the counter balance tank and is opened and closed by the control unit; a pneumatic cylinder which is connected with the exhaust valve; a press slide and a mold which are installed in the pneumatic cylinder; and a motor which elevates or lowers the press slide.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2014;[Reference numerals] (14) Input unit; (20) Control unit; (40) Compressor; (70) Press slide; (80) Mold
