A composition for an optical layer is provided to form an optical layer with excellent optical characteristic such as phase difference(Deltand) value and dimensional stability such as size, to suppress the fluidity by a photopolymer and to prevent the degradation of impact resistance. A composition for an optical layer of a liquid crystal display comprises an RM material of 15~28 weight%, a photoinitiator of 1~5 weight%, a thermal initiator of 0.1~1 weight%, a surfactant of 0.1~5 weight%, a stabilizer of 0.01~5%, a photopolymer having a repeating unit represented by chemical formula 1 of 1~5 weight% and the balance of solvent. In chemical formula 1, m+n=1, 0=m=1 and 0=n=1; R1 is selected from the following chemical formula 2a - 2d; each of R2 and R3 is one selected from a C1-30 alkylamine compound, alkoxyamine compound, alkylbenzyl or alkoxybenzyl compound; and each of R4 and R5 is one selected from carboxylic acid compounds including a C1-30 alicyclic or aromatic compound.
