Use of substituted cyclohexanol ether derivatives (I) as an antimicrobial active substance, is claimed. Use of substituted cyclohexanol ether derivatives of formula (I) as an antimicrobial active substance, is claimed. R1-R5 : H, OH, OCOCH 3, O(CH 2CH 2O) nH, halo, 1-20C alkyl (optionally substituted by OH and optionally interrupted by -O-, -(C=O)-, -(CO)O- or cyclohexyl) or 1-20C O-alkyl; n : 1-20; and R6 : 1-20C alkyl (optionally substituted by OH) or -(CH 2CH 2O) nH. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a formulation comprising (I) and at least one carrier; (2) a composition comprising (I) and at least one antioxidant; (3) preparing the formulation, comprising mixing (I) with the carrier; and (4) 4-(2-hydroxy-ethoxy)-cyclohexanol, 2-(4-methoxy-cyclohexyloxy)-ethanol, 2-tert-butyl-4-methoxy-cyclohexanol, 2-methoxy-4-(3-methoxy-propyl)-cyclohexanol, 4-[3-(2-hydroxy-ethoxy)-propyl]-2-methoxy-cyclohexanol, hexanoic acid 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-cyclohexyl)-propyl ester, 4-(3-hydroxy-butyl)-2-methoxy-cyclohexanol, 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-cyclohexyl)-butan-2-one, 3-(4-hydroxy-cyclohexyl)-propionic acid 2-ethyl-hexyl ester, 1-cyclohexyl-3-(4-methoxy-cyclohexyl)-propane-1,3-diol derivatives of formula (IIa), 1-cyclohexyl-3-(4-methoxy-cyclohexyl)-propan-1-ol derivatives of formula (IIb), 3-cyclohexyl-1-(4-methoxy-cyclohexyl)-propan-1-ol derivatives of formula (IIc) and 1-(3-cyclohexyl-propyl)-4-methoxy-cyclohexane derivatives of formula (IId). The results showed that 2-cyclohexyloxy-ethanol (0.8% in water-(12%) ethanol mixture) decreased colony forming units from 6.3x 10 4 to 0. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
