The system (10) has a cooling circuit (14) for cooling a fuel cell stack (12). A cooling unit (16) is provided with a first coolant tank (28) in which an ion exchanger cartridge (30) is arranged. A second coolant tank (34) is arranged in the cooling circuit such that a side branch (38) of the cooling circuit prevents a flow of coolant between the coolant tanks in a cooling operation. The first and second coolant tanks provide a coolant level (36) in the same adjustable height. The second coolant tank is coupled with an outlet (40) of the first coolant tank through the side branch.
