The method involves coupling transmission inductance (L1) and reception inductance (L2) of respective antenna mounted on respective vehicle. The transmission inductance is supplied with periodic signal having period. An image of vehicle captured using receiving signal from receiving antenna is fed to filter. Amplitude of output signal of the filter is used to determine relative position of vehicle. An independent claim is included for a device for performing the process for determining distance between vehicles.
