Coating the surfaces of metallic elements with a conversion layer in a passivation zone (3') with zirconium ion- or titanium ion-containing solution, comprises compensating the fluid loss in the passivation zone by the supply of deionized water from at least a first zone, which is downstream in the direction of the treatment. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above method comprising supply lines, which guide the liquid metallic elements into a downstream zone opposite to direction of the treatment and into at least one upstream zone.
