The electrical system (1) has a first sub-network (2), which is designed for a first voltage that is higher than 16 Volts and a second sub-network (3), which is designed for a second voltage that is lower than the first voltage. A main power path (4) is provided in the first sub-network of the motor vehicle electrical system. The component paths (6a to 6x) is branched from the main power path. The electrical components are arranged in the component paths. A voltage converter (5) is provided for coupling of the second sub-network to the first sub-network of the motor vehicle electrical system. An independent claim is included for a method for detecting an arc load in the main power path of a motor vehicle electrical system.
