The method involves transmitting a transmission signal in the detection regions (9,10) of radar sensors (5,6) by the radar sensors in successive measurement cycles. A signal reflected from the target object is received as receiving signal by the radar sensors. A target echo of the target object is detected on the basis of the receiving signal. A radial velocity and a target angle to the target echo are determined relative to the vehicle by the radar sensor. Two target echoes are detected to the target object. A value of the radial speed to the two target echoes and a value of the target angle are determined. The lateral velocity of the target object is determined depending on the two values of the radial velocity and the two values of the target angle.
