The system has operation parts (2) actuatable by a user and operated as a capacitive keyboard. Two receiving electrodes (E1, E2), two sending electrodes (S1, S2) and sensor cables recognize an obstacle in an environment of an external power-operated closing element e.g. tailgate (1A), of a motor car (K) or detect change in electrical capacitance during an adjustable movement of the closing element. The receiving and sending electrodes are operable in two different operating modes respectively for recognizing the obstacle and determining operation of the operation parts. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a sensor system for monitoring adjustable movement of an external power-operated closing element at a vehicle.
