The device (10) has a cylinder (14) in which a piston (15) is arranged movably for actuating a cam mechanism (11). An inlet spacer (16) is provided for supplying hydraulic fluid from an oil circuit of an internal combustion engine into the cylinder. A first drain line (18) is provided for discharging the hydraulic fluid from the cylinder into the oil circuit of the internal combustion engine. A second drain line (20) is set for discharging the hydraulic fluid from the cylinder into the oil circuit of the engine. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for controlling hydraulic fluid flow in internal combustion engine; and (2) an internal combustion engine.
