The method involves recording a sequence of images of a vehicle surrounding with the camera, and recognizing the probable presence of a traffic light from the recorded image data. The current traffic state is classified. The validation of classification of the current traffic state is carried out under consideration of the traffic light state that is classified from a preceding image in the image sequence. An independent claim is included for a device for recognizing a state of a traffic light.
