The engine (10) has a compression cylinder (12) and a working cylinder (14) that is connected by a common crankshaft (16). A continuous combustion chamber (20) is arranged in a communicating passage (18) between the compression cylinder and the working cylinder. The compression cylinder is adapted for ignition of compressed gas mixture. The crankshaft includes a crank pin arranged between working cylinder and compression cylinder, so that a piston (52) of the working cylinder runs ahead opposite of piston (50) of the compression cylinder at a leading piston angle, which is about 30 degree.
