The method involves attaching surface elements (6) at a position in a projection surface (5) and two-dimensional projections based on a surface data value. Volume data values are determined based on the projections such that volume elements (8) represent a three-dimensional image of an object (3). A discrete number is assigned to volume elements, where the number represents a material of a workpiece and is larger than two. Materials in the object are determined based on global reconstruction steps of an optimization problem per volume element by iterative computation of a probability vector. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product having a set of instructions for executing a method for computer-aided-, non-destructive examination of a three-dimensional object (2) a device for non-destructive examination of an object.
