The shaft assembly (10) has a turbocharger shaft (11) rotatably mounted by a bearing assembly (12,22) that is provided with a water lubrication. A bearing element (13,14) of the bearing assembly is partially coated with an amorphous carbon coating, particularly a diamond-like carbon coating. The bearing assembly is provided as a radial bearing assembly with a sliding bearing for the journal bearings of the turbocharger shaft. The former bearing element has a sliding surface (13a) of the sliding bearing and the latter bearing element forms another sliding surface (14a) of bearing assembly.
