The invention relates to a method for the autonomous tracking of a follower vehicle on the track of a leader vehicle, in which the leader vehicle is controlled by a driver and the leader vehicle is sent by means of vehicle-to-X communication a Leitbotschaft, which signals the readiness for the autonomous tracking of subsequent vehicles and at least one vehicle identification information and route information of the leader vehicle. The lead message is received by the follower vehicle by means of vehicle-to-X communication and rejected by it or confirmed with a follow-up message, which comprises at least one vehicle identification information of the follower vehicle. After receiving the follow-up message, first coordination information for coordinating the autonomous tracking is sent to the following vehicle from the leader vehicle to an end of the autonomous tracking by means of vehicle-to-X communication. The method is characterized in that second coordination information for coordinating the autonomous tracking by means of environmental sensors of the follower vehicle are detected on the basis of driving movements of the host vehicle, wherein the first and the second coordination information are aligned by the follower vehicle, wherein in agreement matching result that the first and second coordination information corresponding autonomous tracking is carried out and wherein, if the result of the adjustment is different, autonomous tracking is terminated. The invention further relates to a corresponding system.
