The method involves connecting a sense element (112) and a pump cell (116) with pumping electrodes (120) with one another by solid electrolytes (118). A gaseous mixture (114) of an outer pumping electrode (122) is exposed and the gaseous mixture is separated from an inner pumping electrode (124) arranged in a cavity (128) by a porous diffusion barrier (126). The sense element is subjected with a defined concentration of the gas component, where calibration parameter i.e. sense element-specific property, is determined using an adjusted value. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a sensor element for determining concentration of a gas component in a gas mixture.
