The method involves determining a decomposition product of exhaust gas component i.e. nitrogen oxide, in a storage chamber (30). Capacity of a gas sensor i.e. nitrogen oxide sensor (100), for storage of the decomposition product and/or charge and/or time-dependent course of a filling degree is determined, and a sensor parameter e.g. sensor characteristic, is adjusted based on the determination of the capacity of the gas sensor. A decomposition electrode (21) is provided in a decomposition chamber (20), and a hollow chamber electrode (31) is provided in the storage chamber. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for calibrating a gas sensor (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for calibrating a gas sensor.
