The method involves determining instantaneous current charging power or discharging power of the batteries (1a,1b). The number of energy store modules (2-1-2-n) to be activated is determined based on the instantaneous charging power or discharging power of the battery so as to reduce the power loss. The number of to-be-activated energy store modules is selected and activated, based on the determined number of to-be-activated energy store modules. An independent claim is included for battery.
