The gas exchange device (2) has an inlet valve (3) that includes a control slide valve for controlling an inlet (20) of high pressure working fluid into a working chamber (16). The working chamber is controlled by a piston (14) in a piston bore (13). The control slide valve is actuated indirectly by the damping element which is connected with the piston. An independent claim is included for expansion machine.
