The device (1) has a starter pinion (2) moved between a released position and a position engaged with a crown wheel (3) of thermal engine by an engagement actuator e.g. electromagnetic relay. A spring (13) is provided in a transmission path between an actuating element of the actuator and the starter pinion. A latching installation (15) is integrated in the path associated with the spring, and is in a retained position to block the spring upon actuation of the actuator. The installation is moved to a release position of the spring when the installation is in a latch release position.
