The shift lever device (1) has shift lever (2) that is movably mounted on the support (5) in predetermined gearshift positions (N,P3,P4). A sensor arrangement (14) is provided to detect the current shift lever position (AS). The sensor arrangement is coupled to the evaluation device (40) such that the inadmissibility of a change of switching state by evaluating several parameters is determined. The evaluation device is coupled to the locking device such that the change of the permissible switching state due to change of the gearshift position of the shift lever is blocked.
