The method involves illuminating a cut surface (16) by an airflow through lasers (12, 14). The cut surface is observed by a camera (18), which is directed toward the cut surface. A gray level distribution of a camera image is determined with respect to a measure of a spatial distribution of precipitate particles. A size distribution of associated regions of white pixels is determined in the camera image with respect to a measure of a size distribution of the precipitate particles. The entering of light into the camera is filtered by a monochromatic filter. An independent claim is included for a device for monitoring a distribution property of an airflow transported precipitation of snow generated in a wind tunnel.
