The tensioner (1) has a housing (2) that is provided with a piston (3) whose one end is contacted with clamping rail for deflecting traction unit such as chain or belt. A clamping device (9) is provided between the outer wall (8) of piston and inner wall (7) of housing, so that retraction of the piston is stopped in the housing. A damping device (10) is provided between outer wall of piston and inner wall of housing.
