The system (10) has a cathode side (12) provided with an air removal (24). An anode side (14) is provided with a hydrogen supply (40) and a hydrogen removal (46). A burner (52) is provided in an upstream of a turbine (32), for burning hydrogen from the hydrogen removal of the anode side. The hydrogen removal is provided to receive hydrogen from a rinse of the anode side. The hydrogen removal is provided to receive hydrogen from an associated tank system (38). The hydrogen removal is provided with a valve i.e. flush valve (50), for supplying hydrogen to the burner. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
