The method involves measuring a characteristic parameter of performance of a fuel cell i.e. proton exchange membrane fuel cell, at an air mass flow that is supplied to the fuel cell. A determination is made to check whether the measured parameter value is lower than a predetermined threshold value. Oxygen content of ambient air is limited when the measured parameter value exceeds a threshold value. The determination step is again performed, and the fuel cell is switched-off if the measured parameter value exceeds the threshold value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for operating a fuel cell (2) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operating a fuel cell.
