The device (10) has a carrier element (12) such as ball, held by a set of holding units. A set of functional elements (26, 28) e.g. organic LED display, is arranged for providing function of a motor vehicle i.e. passenger car. An electric motor (44) is arranged to move the carrier element together with the functional elements between a set of positions. A gesture detection part (48) causes a movement of the carrier element together with the set of functional elements depending on a detected gesture of a person in a traveling direction relative to the holding unit by the motor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an operating device.
