The method involves using an oxidation catalyst (16) and a particulate filter (18) as the treatment elements. The treatment elements are associated with a cleaning mode by a predeterminable period of time (32). The prevailing temperature (T) is set to the exhaust gas in a first temperature range. The temperature is lower than temperature of temperature range for regenerating the filter. The hydrocarbons deposited at the cleaning mode of the after-treatment element are removed partially from the after-treatment element, when the temperature range ranges from 520-570 Kelvin.
